Of Note: 6 Things to Watch Online

It's definitely winter. And not the pre-Christmas side of winter, where excitement, shopping and fairy lights make everything a little bit easier to deal with. No, it's January; it's wet, and windy, and miserable and cold... it's so COLD. I don't know about you, but I've spent a hell of a lot more time than usual in bed with my laptop, blogging, pinning, reading and watching videos (a lot of which are total crap... see bottom example). Aside from my binge-watching of the O.C. with Maddy (Marry me, Seth), here's a few things I've been watching online...

You Don't have to be broken to be interesting

"Interesting people aren’t the ones who spend a life telling you about the stuff that has made them miserable. Interesting is “Sure! I’ll try that!” It’s “So I read this article…” It’s “Tell me more about that” and “This is what excites me” and “Let me help you.” I’m not saying you have to hide anything. It’s simply about refusing to live as a misery memoir. You are not That Bad Thing That Happened.(Article here.)

I think this is the third time I've featured Laura from Superlatively Rude in a blog post now. It's almost turning into fangirl behaviour and I promise I'll give it a rest after you watch this video she did with Megan from Wonderful You (and read her article on Thought Catalog, linked above, too).

"It’s how you live well in spite of everything that could’ve beaten you that makes you captivating to be around."

Girls Season 4 Trailer

TWO DAYS. Say no more.

Sia - Elastic Heart

The song itself is nice, but you should watch the music video for Sia's new single, Elastic Heart, for the incredible performance by Shia Labeouf and Maddie Ziegler. There's a number of theories surrounding the story the dance tells - does Shia play her father (he tweeted no)? Is it about substance abuse? Mental illness? Whatever it's meant to mean, or not, it's beautiful.

Amnesia Fortnight 2014

Once a year, Double Fine Productions, an award-winning independent game development studio, drops everything and spends an entire fortnight working on developing employee-pitched prototypes instead. Amnesia Fortnight is a YouTube documentary series following the whole process, and it's a great and addictive watch for so many reasons. Pendleton Ward, (creator of Adventure Time) is the highlight of the series, IMO. His game is called Little Pink Best Buds and is about little pink people competing to be your best friends so, er... yeah.

NB: This isn't just one for gamers, trust me. I couldn't even keep my tamogotchis alive, and I get scared and confused navigating Google Maps on street view.

Black Mirror: White Christmas

Despite some questionable moments involving Brooker's writing of women, Black Mirror: White Christmas, like it's preceding episodes, is a clever and frightening portrayal of the (not even that farfetched) near future. Charlie Brooker knows how to take an ordinary and familiar concept - in this case, 'blocking' - and make it terrifying. He knows how to do 'human', and he knows how to tell a story that buries itself inside you.

Uncomfortable moments and bizarre/devastating plot twists make Black Mirror: White Christmas a seriously gripping watch, and, as ever, it's not just about the technology; it's about all the real world ethical issues surrounding the technology. It's a thinker. It makes you question your moral standing, and the portrayal of a society apathetic towards the issues it encompasses is a terrifying one. Because it feels possible, perhaps? And that's the whole point.

I don't want to give too much away, but I've not stopped thinking about it, and I seriously recommend you watch it while you can (it'll be on 4OD for a few more days).

Taylor Swift's Gift Giving of 2014

If you wanted contrast to Black Mirror, you've got it. This is the sort of video designed to make "the basic bitch" cry (or, like, to market Taylor as your generous, loving, girl-next-door celebrity... but whatever). There's 'Tay-lurking', 'Swiftmas', some cameos from her cats, and loads and loads of sobbing teenage girls. What more could you really want?

Taylor, I'm a 23 year old woman, and I love you: be my best friend?

Did you like any of these? What are you watching online at the moment?

  1. I watched black mirror white Christmas as well, it was a really good story and had a few twists and turns I wasn't expecting.

I love watching Girls as well, it's a truthful and non glamorised look at what it's like to be a 20 something in today's world. It portrays that most of us have crazy moments and it's a way of life

  4. I agree that theres always a come down in January where its hard to motivate yourself out of bed to be productive, and the miserable weather doesnt help! I loved the elastic hearts music video. I have always been a big fan of Shia Labeouf, theres a lot of controversy surrounding him but I think theres no denying that he is an increbible actor and completely shows that in the video!
